" Every artist I've ever met has struggled with 'the statement'. I think it's the commitment to a word or sentence they, and me, have so much difficulty with. As soon as an idea or statement is committed to the printed word it's presumed that is exactly what you mean and that is exactly what the work means.

That is not to say that I do not have a notion of what my own work tries to explore or say. I do. The problem is today one particular aspect is uppermost in my mind- yesterday it was something else and tomorrow....
This makes for very difficult 'statements'.

When I read something I wrote last week/ year/decade ago I blush at its naivety, its over-simplification or its pretension. Of course, I didn't think this was the case at the time of writing (as I do now of this)- but hindsight is a great leveller.

So what of my 'statement' now. Well,.......
